HISTORY
The region of Arequipa was occupied by the Inca Empire, and used as a checkpoint from the coast to Cuzco. And after the Inca's collapse, the conquistador Garcí Manuel de Carbajal founded the city as "La villa hermosa de Arequipa" in 15 august 1540.
GEOGRAPHY
Arequipa is located in a valley surrounded by volcanos in southern Peru. The Chili and Torrentera river runs through the city.
TRANSPORT
Arequipa has buses you can take all around the city, Cholo taxis and normal taxis are also commonly found around the city. Arequipa is also safe to walk.
CULTURE
Arequipa's culture is a mix of Indigenous andeans, spanish and mestizo influences. Arequipa is known for it's white volcano stone commonly used in buildings all around Arequipa, earning the city nickname as "The white city".
GASTRONOMY
Arequipa's gastronomy is a fusion of indigenous and spanish flavors. It's known for it's spicy traditional dishes like Rocoto Rolleno and Chupe de Camarones.
